IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad / BOM Deal
February 18, 2017, 10:26:25 AM
How's BOM shaping up?   The IL-2 team are offering a 40% (off) deal, so even though I haven't indulged in flight sims for several years, I'm sorely tempted!

IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad / Upgrading to Latest Version
December 10, 2015, 12:38:31 PM
Well I decided to have another look at BOS, managed to find it on my PC, loaded it and the home screen  tells me I need to update my (original) version.

Stuffed if I can find a download site - doesn't appear to be on the BOS website or forum.

Is it so bad they keep it hidden away somewhere?

Or (more likely) is it a conspiracy against the BlueDog?

Bluey's Bar / Drink Driving Warning
January 19, 2015, 09:23:49 PM
With the holidays upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my family & friends about drinking and driving.

Some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends.

Well, three days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails, followed by some rather nice red wine.  Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before .. I took a cab home!

Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they  waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident.   This was a real relief and surprise because I had never driven a cab before.

I don't even know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it!!

IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad / CH Settings
December 27, 2014, 05:44:09 PM
Any CH users out there?

I haven't been able to find pitch and roll settings that give a realistic response to controls.   So far have only tried shaping response curves using the ingame facility but without getting satisfactory results.

Might have to try shaping within the CH Manager map; but that's a bummer because I have to go in and out of game every time I change a test setting

IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad / TIR
December 14, 2014, 12:05:59 PM
Ted, me old china, I can't get TIR up and running in game.   Can't find anything in control settings that vaguely resembles TIR.  Ideas?

Not much point iasking Conky.   He'd just give a devil-may-care 'muhahahahahahah' and call me a big girl's blouse.

IL2: Battle Of Stalingrad / Purchase
December 11, 2014, 08:34:30 AM
Sorta mentioned it on another forum topic but need further info.

As far as I can ascertain there are three methods of purchasing this sim:

1.  Steam,

2.   IL2 BOS website and,

3.   getting a hard copy on disk from somewhere (early 2015 for Oz).

I believe that if I get it on Steam the sim will be updated automatically - which seems to be an advantage.   But is there any disadvantage with gameplay or how I join up with a server?  For example, if Chuffys goes BOS and Fitz or FT run a session on their server, can I still join through Steam (somehow)?  How does it affect me if I want to join a BOS server on Hyperlobby (when and if HL puts up a BOS selection to connect to).   (Regretably, this shows the BlueDog's lack of understanding of how Steam works.)

Is there any advantage in going for option 2 over option 1?

Is there any advantage in having my own DVD (option 3)?

Technical support / HSFX Auto Updater
November 27, 2014, 05:29:00 AM
Blundered through downloading and installing HSFX 7.02 onto 1946 4.12.2.   Now I see on the 242 SQN website that I need an update to 7.03; but this can only be done through their Auto Updater program.

Have downloaded this, and started the install but it won't complete the installation and gives me the following message:

"Setup has detected that this computer does not meet the requirements to install this software.   The following blocking issues must be resolved before you can instal Microsoft Visual C++ x86 Redistributable setup software package."

To be resolved:

"A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ x86 Redistributable  has been detected on the machine".

I have found an MV C++ 2013 in programs - whatever that means or does (oer doesn't).

No idea what this is all about or how to resolve it; and for one reason or another I can't log into the 242 Squadron forum to ask there.

So, I'm asking all you clever chappies......... :-*

Bush Pilots Tales / Cockpit Blues!
May 26, 2014, 11:11:55 AM
QuoteOMG Conkers....those instruments look like a WW2 bomber!

Didn't know they still had stuff like that flying around! Where did you find it....Davis Monahan a/c cemetery?

Now here's a real post-WWII bomber cockpit.   Care to guess what it is?  Not too hard.

No it's not TSR2. ;D

Ah, memories (sigh)

Rise of Flight / ROF Channel Battles Edition.
April 26, 2014, 09:34:25 AM
I see this is being offered on Steam.   Where does this fit into the scheme of things?   Does it have all the original ROF stuff plus extension, or is it an add on to a Steam version, or is it a stand alone in its own right?

Says it's not compatible with the non-steam version of ROF.

So there I was, 'puter chugging along as usual.   Suddenly, I hear a whirrrrrr - like a fan going into overdrive.   The screen goes a deathly black - much like the IL2 headshot - and Percy 'puter closes down.

So I hit the reset button and the machine gets the start-up Gigabyte screen, lots of numbers and stuff, then a screen telling me the machine hasn't started up properly "but never fear, for I shall do a repair" sayeth the screen - then dies again.

So I took the dog for a walk............

Some time later I started Percy up (with some trepidation) and found all appears to be working - got stuff on the screen, it plays the Black Death track OK, and all the fans appear to be working.

EXCEPT......the blue light inside the case is no longer lit!

Q:  I know the light make the kit look cool; but where does it come from - and if it's not there, what does it all mean?

The whole thing's a bit dusty, so while I'm waiting sage advice from ye computer gurus, I'll take it outside and give it a good hose down with a Karcher pressure sprayer.   Maybe that will fix it! ;D

I don't have a Facebook account; nor do I Tweet, so I really didn't understand why people would bother to be "Bloggers"............until my attention was drawn to this guy's (example of ) blogging:

Just sit back and peruse, relaxing with a cup of coffee.   But be prepared to wipe splattered coffee from the monitor screen!

IL2: Cliffs of Dover / Mod Out!
March 19, 2013, 08:18:04 AM
CLOD fanboys are probably aware that the CLOD developers will not be pursuing upgrades to the sim.   However, there is an underground movement taking on the 'improvement' task; and developing CLOD mods - much like 1946 was developed further with UP3.

Their mod is out and (reportedly) does some good things.   Get it here:

http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/foru...ull=1#post37990

But before you install it, make a copy of CLOD and install it over that copy.   Steam will recognize both.

To get it to work in Steam you will need to make a 'launch' shortcut to the 'launch.exe', activate Steam (but don't select the normal game) then double-click on the launch shortcut to activate the modded game.   If you do it correctly you will see the letters 'MOD' overwritten on the CLOD logo of an aircraft in sighting reticle.

If you have problems, just ask.

Bluey's Bar / The Navigator and the Fighter Pilot
February 21, 2013, 12:55:09 AM
The world's best navigator died and went to heaven and St. Peter said "Welcome to heaven my son, you have been the best navigator in the world and have done wonderful things for you friends, family, and country your whole life.  For that reason I am authorized to let you choose which part of heaven you would like to go to.

"Well", the navigator said, "I'd really like to go somewhere where I will never see another fighter pilot again - those guys were loud and obnoxious, and generally just a pain in the ass.  I never want to have to see them, talk to them, or deal with them again ever".

St. Peter replied "It's actually not much of a problem up here, we don't ever get many of them around, but just to be sure, I have the perfect place - it is a deserted tropical island where you will never be bothered again by any fighter pilots".

The navigator went off to the island very happy.  About 1 week later he was back at the gates demanding to see St. Peter.

    "What's wrong" St. Peter said.

"Well" said the navigator "I thought you said I will never have to deal with a fighter pilot again.  I was walking along the beach yesterday and I looked up, and there, coming towards me, was this guy swaggering along in a flight suit and g-suit, a really big wrist watch with a girl under each arm, telling war stories that all started with "There I was..."

St Peter looked puzzled and said "Let me check something" and then went into his computer to check the whereabouts of both of the fighter pilots in heaven - he was still looking puzzled and then it dawned on him "That wasn't a fighter pilot you saw yesterday - that was God - He sometimes likes to dress up and pretend He’s a fighter pilot.

IL2: Cliffs of Dover / RC2 Patch
October 19, 2012, 07:05:28 AM
It's out.   Just dial up Steam and be rewarded with CLOD Version 1.11.20362.

Haven't tried it (my PC is presently devoid of all flight sim hardware).   Reports are favourable, though.

This is the final patch for CLOD - ever!!!!   They will be moving on to another scenario.
